Volume 1: Die with Unclosed Eyes 10. Coffin Stone
The driver seemed to have sensed the strange expressions of everyone in the car. He saw Li Zhao "urinating openly" through the rearview mirror.
It wasn't me who let Li Zhao know that something was wrong with his body, but the bus driver. He yelled, "Don't you know how to get off the bus when you need to pee? Where's your sense of public morality? Where's it gone?"
Li Zhao just took a subconscious look and immediately found out that something was wrong with his body. His panic at that moment was beyond words, but it was as if his body functions were completely out of control and he couldn't control his body at all. Although he saw that he was peeing his pants, he couldn't end this embarrassing behavior.
Li Zhao stood there at a loss. The driver, not caring about leaving the station, stopped the car, opened the door and said, "If you don't get out, I'm calling the police."
Li Zhao and I quickly got out of the car, both feeling very embarrassed.
Although he stopped peeing, water kept dripping from his pants. Passersby saw this and walked around. What else could we do? We could only pretend that we knew nothing and jogged forward with our heads down. After we found a toilet and hid in it, I went to buy him a pair of beach pants. Li Zhao changed into them on the spot and then he dared to come out with his back straight.
"What's wrong with you? Other people pee in their pants after falling asleep, why did you pee while walking?"
"Bullshit, I haven't wet my pants since I was five years old. I don't know what happened today." Li Zhao frowned.
"Or go to the hospital and get treatment if you're sick."
Li Zhao thought for a while and said, "I really can't understand it. He is such an old man, but he wet his pants in front of so many people. He has lost all his face today." After that, he went to the Urology Department of the Municipal People's Hospital with me dejectedly.
After a series of examinations, no problems were found. During this process, Li Zhao urinated "completely independently" again, which shows that there is nothing wrong with his "self-control system", otherwise he would definitely still have urinary incontinence.
The old specialist, wearing thick glasses, prescribed him a course of Chinese patent medicine to nourish the kidneys and said earnestly, "Young man, even though you're young and healthy, you should take it easy. Some things can make you happy, but they should be done in moderation."
Li Zhao was stunned for a moment before he reacted. He quickly responded, "I don't have a girlfriend, really."
"What I said is just a reference. What you do is of course entirely up to you. In short, you must maintain good living habits. Otherwise, if you develop a disease at a young age, it will be too late to regret it."
After leaving the hospital, I laughed so hard that I couldn't even straighten my waist. Li Zhao said aggrievedly: "You know my situation. I wanted to do something about it, but no one cooperated."
"Don't you have the fifth girl with you? You don't have Parkinson's disease, so isn't it too frequent?"
"Fuck you! I'm so busy every day I can barely lift my head, how can I have the energy to deal with this? Besides, if this causes incontinence, I'll have to do it so many times a day. Don't let the friction start a fire."
I almost fainted from laughing, but Li Zhao didn't wet his pants again after that. I guess it was just a rare and low-probability event, and I soon forgot about it.
As a result, I received a call from Li Zhao in the middle of the night. He said in a panic: "I peed again, the whole bed is wet."
My sleepiness suddenly vanished and I asked, "What happens after I fall asleep?"
"Yes, this shouldn't count as bed-wetting, right?"
"Your situation is really a bit troublesome. Don't go to work tomorrow. Go to the Provincial Hospital for another thorough checkup. Don't be reluctant to spend money. I will reimburse your medical expenses."
"I...Brother, do you think I won't get a terminal illness?" His tone was extremely depressed.
"Don't fucking speculate. I've never heard of anyone dying from bedwetting. I guess you just have a mental disorder. Once the cause is found and you take some medicine, you'll be fine." Although I said that, I was still very worried. I didn't sleep much after hanging up the phone. I got up early in the morning and was supposed to go to the company, but I got a call from my cousin Li Zhao on the way. He said he had some ideas that he needed to discuss with me, so I went to his house instead.
Cousin Li Zhao was squatting at the entrance of the alley smoking. When he saw me, he stood up and said, "My brother said he's not feeling well and asked me to come to you directly."
"Yes, I feel a little feverish." I said casually.
"Brother Yu, I want to add another floor to our old house, is that okay?"
I said, "That's right. Actually, your bungalow occupies a fairly large area, but would your neighbors agree to add to it?"
"I also got the news yesterday that this alleyway is going to be demolished. Not only me, but everyone who can build a house has used their connections to smooth things over. If we can build a house before June next year, the area can be included in the property certificate. The money I saved from renovations will be enough to add another floor."
"But you're lucky. If this area is demolished, you'll be very rich." I said with some envy.
He grinned widely and said, "I can't say I'm rich, but life is definitely better than before." As I walked to his door, he said, "Brother Yu, I have a small suggestion. If your workers need to urinate next time, can they go to the public toilet outside? This clay pot is our pickle jar, and it's an old thing."
The pickle jar that cousin Li Zhao mentioned was behind the courtyard gate. Because the light in the bungalow was extremely dim, I didn't notice the jar behind his door even though I came there several times. I only saw that the shape of the jar was no different from that of an ordinary pickle jar, with a big belly and a small mouth. When I walked to the jar, I could faintly smell a smell of urine.
Li Zhao and I are the only ones who have been to this room, and I have never peed here, so the person who did this could only be Li Zhao.
When I thought of this, a thought occurred to me: could Li Zhao's urinary incontinence be related to the fact that he urinated into a jar?
This jar looks old and dilapidated, and it is obviously an antique. It is possible that there was some "noise". Thinking of this, I made an excuse to leave the alley and call Li Zhao to ask if he had urinated in the jar behind his cousin's house.
Li Zhao said, "I did pee in that tub yesterday because I had to. It's not my fault. Their public toilet was so dirty that there was no place to step. I just... I just..."
"I think you're asking for trouble."
"Well, at worst I can just scrub the jar clean, what else can I do?"
"That's not what I meant. I think your incontinence might be related to urinating into a jar."
"Oh my god, the more you say it, the weirder it seems to me."
I couldn't explain it to him, so I told him not to see a doctor yet and to go home and wait for my news. After hanging up, I called Luo Tianbao again and told him about Li Zhao's experience. He said, "Maybe it's related to the jar. I'll come over as soon as possible to check on the situation."
Since he was here, I was no longer worried, so I went back to discuss the matter of adding to the house with my cousin Li Zhao. After the deal was done, I was about to go back to the company when I received a call from Luo Tianbao. He told me that he was already in Shanghai, so I went to the bus station to pick him up, had a quick bite to eat, and then returned to my cousin Li Zhao's house.
I didn't explicitly explain Luo Tianbao's purpose for coming, simply stating that he was in charge of the building's construction. He pretended to walk around the house before approaching the urn. He inspected it from head to toe, then flashed his flashlight to peer inside. Then, he surveyed the small courtyard and said, "Your house is quite large. A private courtyard in the heart of the city is truly a rare find."
"It's mainly because it's too old, otherwise I really wouldn't want to move. High-rise buildings are nice, but living in them won't give you the peace and quiet of a house with its own entrance and yard." Li Zhao's cousin said.
Luo Tianbao nodded and said, "That's right, but the cement floor in the yard looks quite smooth. It must have been repaired recently, right?"
"Yes, originally this yard was just mud. They paved a small path with bricks and planted plum trees on both sides. It was beautiful, but when it rained, the whole house would be covered in mud. Later, they dug up a few of the plum trees and paved a cement path."
"Did you dig up anything unusual when you were turning the soil?" Luo Tianbao asked.
"Hey, how could we be so lucky? If we could find good things just by digging, would we be so poor? We only found a few bricks under the mud, and later my mother put them in a jar to pickle vegetables."
Luo Tianbao turned to me and said, "Send Li Zhao over."
I asked worriedly, "Is it any trouble?"
"I hope there's no trouble. He's desecrating the spirit stone. If these bricks are coffin stones, then it'll be difficult to deal with."
